Severomuysky Tunnel-2 will solve an acute problem caused by the limited traffic capacity on RZD’s Far East route. No more than 16 pairs of trains per day can pass through the existing Severomuysky Tunnel that entered operation in 2003. Construction of the new tunnel will make it possible to increase annual freight volume from 16 million tonnes to 100 million tonnes, while expanding access to premium APR markets for Russian exporters.
The Sibanthracite Group submitted a proposal to build Severomuysky Tunnel-2 without government funding. The initiative was supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The construction of Severomuysky Tunnel-2 will contribute to improving the socio-economic situation in the Republic of Buryatia.
The regional budget will receive additional tax revenues, and some 3,000 new jobs will be created in the next 2-3 years.
By order of Russian Railways General Director Oleg Belozerov, a joint working group on the project to build Severomuysky Tunnel-2 has been formed. It includes the heads of the relevant departments and offices in Russian Railways, as well as top managers from Sibathracite and VostokCoal. This working group has identified the main areas of focus for bringing the project to realization.
The Sibanthracite Group has created the ‘Severomuysky Tunnel-2’ project company. The VostokCoal company, which has extensive experience starting projects from scratch, will manage the construction process.
Construction of the new tunnel will begin within a year and take five years to complete. The volume of investment will be 60 billion rubles.
Advanced modern technology and equipment will be used in the construction of the tunnel, which will ensure the speed and safety of the work. In particular, probe-drilling technology and special equipment for lining tunnel walls in complicated geological conditions will be employed.
The tunneling will be carried out simultaneously from both sides using two specialized shields designed for both rocky soil and unstable rocks. The shields are fitted with equipment for exploratory pre-drilling and lining the tunnel wall.
